THIRTEEN

Beast

I waited on tenterhooks for Calla to come back. This had to work. I’d spent the whole night pacing in my hotel room, practically ready to claw through the walls to get to my mate. My instincts had been screaming that only I could keep her safe, but Phoenix’s calm voice had played through my head, reminding me of my goal. I had to wait; I had to stay away to keep her safe. So wait I did. I waited the longest ten hours of my life.

My wolf spirit was slowly coming back up through the haze The Draught had forced him into, my senses sharpening with every hour. My instincts slowly coming back to life. I’d scented Shadow on my way inside but couldn’t pinpoint where he was hiding. I could tell that a female shifter had been inside Calla’s apartment at some point, but I couldn’t determine how long ago that visit had been. And I finally figured out why Calla always smelled a bit like wolf. The slow response and filtered senses left me feeling a bit off-balance, so I was thankful Shadow was still outside, guarding Calla and me, just in case.

After several minutes, Calla appeared, looking wary but not scared. No, there was no fear in her. Just an apprehensive questioning vibe that made something warm and filled with possibility bloom inside of me. Something that felt a bit like hope.

She watched me for a long, tense moment, standing as still as stone at the entry to her hall.

“Tell me about mating.”

I nodded, psyching myself up internally for this conversation. Moving across the room, we came together to sit on opposite ends of the couch, the divide between us wide but not hostile.

I rubbed a hand over my chin, the scruff of having not shaved that morning raspy under my skin. “What do you want to know?”

“How do you know I’m your mate?” she asked, her face serious, betraying nothing. “You said you saw me.”

I nodded. “One of my denmates, a man by the name of Phoenix, is mated to a witch. Her sister did a spell thing to give me sight of my mate, not by my choice, though. She said she’d been getting flashes of you and was concerned that you needed me.” I held my hands up as she sat up straighter, a glare in her eyes. “Hey, you’ve been doing great on your own. She meant you were in danger, which was the only reason I let her show me. So that I could figure out what to do to help you.”

She sat back, calmer again. “But you ran away instead of coming here.”

“I did. I thought the baby meant you were married. I’m not the most honorable man, but I would never come between someone’s vows that way. I promised I would stay away, maybe check in now and again to make sure you were safe and comfortable.” I dropped my head and swallowed hard, voicing words that I had never wanted to admit.
